When you live a long time in one place, the garden goes through as many evolutions and revisions as you do. Our house is perched halfway up a steep hillside. It was already terraced because that’s the only way olive farming can happen—make wide steps on the hillside, one ox-turn wide as you work down a slope. What we have cultivated amounts to seven levels. There is another garden terrace beside the house, graced with four tigli (linden) trees—a shady garden with dining table, pergola, and comfortable chairs for entertaining and reading outside. With so many revisions through the years, maybe I have a few ideas that translate to your garden. What I know for sure is that if you make a garden you love, you live in beauty. Everyday beauty, what good luck to have that. Beauty gives you strength and joy.
7 levels: Stone driveway entrance with swaths of lavender, lemon pot walkway to house, grassy lane, rose terrace, pool house level, pool and terrace, walk to the lake view.
